From Shy Beginner to Confident Performer: Cody’s Musical Journey

When Cody first started lessons at 232 Music Studios, he wasn’t looking to become a confident performer. In fact, according to his mom Laura, he was a pretty shy kid.

But over the years, something remarkable has happened.

Through music lessons, recitals, and the encouragement of teachers who genuinely care, Cody has grown into a musician who confidently walks onto the stage, tackles challenging pieces, and shares his music with others.

A Family That Loves Music

Music has always been an important part of the Larson family’s life.

Laura and her husband both participated in music growing up and saw firsthand how music helps people learn, grow, and navigate life’s challenges. Today, music continues to bring their family together—especially during the holidays.

“At Christmas time, we all get around the piano,” Laura shared. “We sing and play Christmas carols together, and it just brings us together as a family.”

With a home already filled with music, it wasn’t surprising when Cody began asking for lessons.

Interestingly, Cody originally wanted to learn violin.

After talking with his elementary school music teacher, Laura decided piano might be the perfect first step before beginning violin lessons. A recommendation, some online searching, and an Intro Lesson at 232 Music Studios led the family through our doors.

That Intro Lesson made all the difference.

“Cody came out and just loved it,” Laura said. “We decided to sign up right then and there.”

“He has learned that mistakes happen and you move on from them.”

Growing through Music

While Cody has developed strong musical skills over the years, some of the biggest changes have happened outside of the music itself.

Laura says one of the most valuable lessons Cody has learned is perseverance.

“He has learned that mistakes happen and you move on from them,” she explained.

That’s a lesson we talk about often at 232 Music Studios. A missed note isn’t the end of the performance—it’s simply an opportunity to focus on the next note. Learning to recover from mistakes at the piano often translates into greater resilience in everyday life.

For Cody, that mindset has helped build something even bigger: confidence.

Finding Confidence on Stage

One of the greatest joys for our team has been watching Cody become more comfortable performing.

What began as a shy student has turned into a musician who confidently performs challenging pieces inspired by video games, movies, and other music he loves.

Laura says the transformation has been incredible to watch.

“Personally, he has grown so much confidence from getting up and performing in front of other people.”

One memory stands out above all the others.

At one of Cody’s first in-studio recitals, he invited a family member to come watch him perform. Laura remembers how excited he was—not just to play the music, but to share it with someone he cared about.

“It was the first time I’d ever seen him so excited to share something like that with people he loves.”

Those moments remind us why performance opportunities matter. It’s not about perfection. It’s about building confidence, creating memories, and experiencing the joy of sharing music with others.

More Than Just Lessons

Another aspect of the 232 experience that has made an impact on Cody is the opportunity to learn from multiple teachers and participate in group classes.

Laura believes exposure to different teaching styles has helped Cody see music—and life—from different perspectives.

She also appreciates the way our teachers take time to get to know students beyond the instrument.

“They try to get to know him on a more personal level,” she said. “That personal connection motivates him to do better.”

When students feel known, valued, and encouraged, growth happens naturally.

Looking Ahead

Today, Cody continues to challenge himself with new music, perform with confidence, and grow as both a musician and a person.

For families who are considering music lessons, Laura’s advice is simple:

“Go to the Intro Lesson and try it out. That’s what hooked Cody.”

She adds that music lessons provide much more than musical skills.

“It teaches life skills, it teaches great music, and it’s a wonderful, positive experience.”

We’re grateful to have Cody as part of the 232 Music Studios family and can’t wait to see where his musical journey takes him next.
